2017 Feature Breed - Heritage Breeds
As we celebrate the rewards that generations of careful breeding and the adoption of innovative genetic excellence deliver, it is timely to celebrate the heritage breeds that played such an important role in the foundation of the Australian sheep and wool industry.
Our heritage breeds comprise Cheviot, Romney, English Leicester, Dorset Down, Hampshire Down, Ryeland, Lincoln, Dorset Horn, Shropshire and Southdown.
Today, these breeds – which include those with the long wool that appeals to handspinners and weavers and others renowned for excellent-flavoured and fine textured meat – have been preserved to ensure their genetic heritage remains viable.
There is a breed in this category that offers a great deal, whether to prime lamb producers, keen craftspeople or the hobby farmer looking for a niche product.
Come and see the best of the best heritage breeds at this year’s Australian Sheep and Wool Show.
